    MySpace Music Initiative Marries iTunes, MTV Unplugged

    In a Web 2.0 variation of MTV's Unplugged, MySpace today is inviting musicians across the globe to return to the studio and rerecord videos of their songs for distribution on MySpace. The News Corp. site will sell the performances through a special Web page devoted to the recording session, allowing musicians to sell the songs for a price that they set, while keeping most of the revenue for themselves. Financial terms were not disclosed, but rev-shares will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

    MTV to offer all South Park clips online 

    MTV Networks plans to make every clip from every episode of hit animated comedy "South Park" available for free online next year as part of a strategy to reach consumers everywhere.

    The decision from the biggest division of media conglomerate Viacom Inc follows on the heels of the "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," whose popularity online has helped boost television viewership.

    MTV Networks's Comedy Central network began offering in October some 13,000 "Daily Show" videos dating back to 1999.


     

    Alternative media sees silver lining from strike

     The Hollywood screenwriters' strike is an opportunity for alternative media companies, from DVD renters to cable television and the Web, to reach new audiences, entertainment industry executives told Reuters.

    "To the extent that people aren't watching the (television) networks, that's an interesting opportunity," Peter Levinsohn, president of News Corp's Fox Interactive Media, home to the wildly popular MySpace online social network, said at the Reuters Media Summit.
