THE
“GOD, SEX & APPLE PIE” STORY: UNRELENTING FILM
PRODUCER FINALLY LANDS MAJOR DISTRIBUTION FOR HIS MOVIE
(Los
Angeles, CA, May 27, 2004) Unrelenting persistence, total
commitment and unshakeable faith. That’s what it takes to
make a film these days.
Independent
movie producer/writer Jerome Courshon simply never gave up.
Despite 26 Visa, Master Card and American Express cards to
initially fund his 35-Millimeter movie, mounting debt and
rejections from every distributor, he launched the movie
himself in selected U.S. cities, and finally landed
distribution with Warner Bros.
The
movie he wrote and produced, GOD,
SEX & APPLE PIE, is all about nine friends, who get
together during a holiday weekend and grapple with life, love,
relationships, and a pair of handcuffs. In a nutshell, all
hell breaks loose.
It’s
a great, funny, joyful film. “A sharply-written and incisive
ensemble film that is a terrific blend of comedy and
pathos,” said Bill Zwecker of The Chicago Sun-Times.
Courshon
explains how the movie was nearly doomed from the start.
Unable to raise the $3-5 million needed for the production, he
ended up using all of his credit cards to shoot the movie. His
trials and tribulations included:
·
Directors committing to, then dropping out of the
project
·
Actors dropping out because their lead role wasn’t
big enough
·
A snowstorm on location during the filming of this
"late summer" movie
·
The international sales company who funded $55,000 for
post-production goes belly up
·
The movie’s Premiere on opening night at an important
film festival results in disaster when the festival's
projection equipment doesn't arrive
·
Every distributor rejects picking it up
·
A PR firm duplicitously promises a Roger Ebert review
with the movie’s opening in Chicago
·
The New York theatrical run coincides with the
terrorist attacks of 9/11
Despite
the unending stream of obstacles after obstacles, Courshon
raises financing 8 different times to keep the movie going
forward, despite relatives telling him to “Get a real
job!!” GOD, SEX
& APPLE PIE won 3 Best Picture Awards, 2 Audience
Awards and 1 Best Screenplay Award at film festivals. But
major film distributors paid no attention. So Courshon raised
more money to launch a “Do It Yourself” theatrical
release, and recently finally landed a distribution deal with
Warner Bros.
