Have you ever tried to watch a video
with poor or distracting production
values – clumsy camerawork, fuzzy focus,
funky framing, lousy lighting, awful
audio? It’s hard to pay attention to,
let alone, understand the content. When
you find yourself responsible for making
a video without being in a position to
hire professionals, you will want your
videos to connect and communicate rather
than annoy and aggravate.
Some people prefer
books for dummies or guides for idiots.
For those who might appreciate learning
video through video, however, consider
this DVD, “How to Keep Your
DO-IT-YOURSELF VIDEO From Looking Like
You Did It Yourself.”

From Library Journal
This fascinating book carries the reader from preproduction to
postproduction, explaining through interviews with professionals
(e.g., Haskell Wexler on photography, Neil Koenigsberg on
publicity) exactly what such people as the sound mixer and story
analyst do in the making of a motion picture. Although presented
in narrative rather than dictionary form, this work will be
useful to reference librarians because of its index and
glossary. Updated from the 1987 edition (LJ 11/15/87) to reflect
ratings modifications and technical breakthroughs in films like
Jurassic Park and Forrest Gump, this is an excellent
introduction for anyone interested in film production today.
Highly recommended for all film collections.

video editor or to improve your editing skills? Regardless of whether
you are cutting film or video, music, documentaries or drama,
Transitions is a very impressive book about the art of film and video
editing. Written by 15 of the very best artists in the film editing
field, they provide their expertise regarding the principles,
techniques and lessons that have defined their careers. This
is real world world information and insight from those who edit film
and video day in and day out. It is not a manual about how to use
Premiere or Final Cut Pro but an inspirational guide to the
"philosophy" of why we edit.
The books covers many
different points of view regarding the tricky decision of which cut to
make first and the intricacies of building narrative, to working with
music and rhythm, to the specifics of editing in genres, Transitions
captures the life and art of the editor, indulging their differences,
engaging in every author's unique experience and tapping into their
real world wisdom. Fifteen essays cover
diverse subjects from editing animation to weaving multiple
storylines, but the focus is always on the art. Aside from early
"Wired" magazine graphic layout which can be a bit difficult
to read at times, this is an excellent book. It teaches the essence of
editing. At the end of every chapter, I was motivated to throw the
book down, rush to my computer and start cutting some video. It truly
has that effect.

The Little Digital Video Book
by Michael Rubin is a
great little book that
is geared solely to the very beginner. If you want
to evolve from just shooting family events to creating family video
movies that will be cherished forever, this is the book for you.
Rubin spends a good deal of time on how to
prepare to shoot an event; how to use your camcorder and shoot an
family outing, party or other occasion, with a mind towards editing it
together to create a good looking final production. He details the
importance of preparation and organization, especially if one shoots a
LOT of home videos and offers several innovative organizational plans
and concepts. The book covers the basics of shot composition and
selection, camera movement and lighting, editing and addition of
special effects. The section on audio is especially thorough.
The various chapters are interspersed with
several easy to accomplish assignments which help to reinforce the
basic elements Rubin is laying out.
The book is well laid out, includes easy
to understand illustrations and photos, and can be quickly absorbed in
just a few hours. My only critique is that Rubin is a bit conservative
in his suggestions and in my humble opinion, does not leave enough
room for experimentation, movement and "found" shots. Aside
from that minor quibble, this is an excellent manual for those who are
looking to start shooting and editing digital video.

TechTV Guide to Creating Digital Video
Like a Pro
This 450-plus page book tackles a
difficult and quickly evolving subject. With a March 2002 publishing
date, it is as up to date as can be. Much of the book deals with
shooting and capturing video - including which camcorders to buy and
how to probably use them. It covers microphones, lighting and how to
use the various manual controls found on most camcorders. It
also includes a detailed section about what digital video is and the
various flavors.
Finally, about halfway through, the
book gets around to discussing editing digital video and provides a
good and thorough overview of what is required, the various concepts
and file types, the programs that are available, and how to do video
editing. As there are a plethora of video editing programs on the
market, the editor Deras Flynn, wisely concentrates on detailing two
of the most common editing programs - Adobe Premiere for the prosumer
and professional, and ULead VideoStudio for the first time user.
The book also discusses outputting the
final video production to tape, to the Internet, and to burning a CD,
VCD or DVD. The enclosed CD includes sample and demo versions of
various multimedia editing programs and links to several digital video
resources on the Internet. It also includes Sandra, a neat Windows
diagnostic and benchmarking utility from SiSoft.
For those just starting out in making your
own movies and using computerized editing, this is a great starter
guide that covers almost everything you need to know in simple and
easy to understand language. Click TechTV's
