Animation - Books, CDs and Other Guides on how to Create Great Animated Videos and Films

If you are using Side Effect's Houdini, you need to pick up this book. Houdini On The Spot presents over 350 techniques you need to know. Accessible and easy to follow, it clearly illustrates the essential methods that pros use to get the job done efficiently and creatively. Screenshots and step-by-step instructions show you how to:

* Navigate and manipulate the version 9 interface
* Create procedural models that can be modified quickly and efficiently with Surface Operators (SOPs)
* Use Particle Operators (POPs) to build complex simulations with speed and precision
* Minimize the number of operators in your simulations with Dynamics Operators (DOPs)
* Extend Houdini with customized tools to include data or scripts with Houdini Digital Assets (HDAs)
* Master the version 9 rendering options including Physically Based Rendering (PBR), volume rendering and motion blur
* Quickly modify timing, geometry, space and rotational values of your animations with Channel Operators (CHOPs)
* Create and manipulate elements with Composite Operators (COPs); Houdinis full-blown compositor toolset
* Make your own SOPs, COPs, POPs, CHOPs, and shaders with the Vector Expressions (VEX) shading language
* Configure the Houdini interface with customized environments and hotkeys
* Mine the treasures of the dozens of standalone applications that are bundled with Houdini

Secrets of Oscar-Winning Animation - If you love animation then you're in for a treat!

Olivier Cotte has gone behind-the-scenes of 13 of the greatest short animations ever made, interviewing the directors and close collaborators who made each one, to offer us a unique guide to classic techniques from the masters of their crafts. 'An insight into the minds and techniques of the undisputed masters of their art.'
Peter Lord, Aardman Animation Creator and Director

'Secrets of Oscar-winning Animation provides animators with a rare insight into the creative processes and production methodologies of Oscar winning film-makers. By bringing personal accounts of the film-makers and key production collaborators together in one volume, Olivier Cottee provides an invaluable testament to the creative diversity of animation excellence.'
Jeremy Moorshead, Animation Department Chair, Savannah College of Art and Design

'The joy, genius and magic of independent animated filmmaking is still very much alive and well! This book, more than any other, champions a great cause. A fabulous read! Thank you to the author, the Academy and the filmmakers for showing the world what the infinite potential of animation is capable of achieving at its highest level and what great personal sacrifices are required by the filmmaker to make it all happen!'

Are you working with Cinema 4D or are you considering starting to use it? The new Cinema 4D R10 Handbook is an excellent guide for those who are new to this powerful animation development program as well as for those who are experienced with the application but want to fine tune their skills and pick up a few cool points.

The Cinema 4D 10 Handbook teaches how to harness this power and flexibility through a project-based approach that allows users to create impressive projects as they learn C4D's array of tools and functions. This is a completely updated edition of this popular guide to the ins-and-outs of C4D that provides new C4D users with a complete introduction to the powerful and affordable C4D program, while teaching the fundamental principles of 3D.

The book is best for beginners and explores the most powerful and frequently used aspects of the program and explains how best to use them. Through intensive tutorials, users will learn ideas and techniques not covered in the manuals, and they'll learn about the theory behind why things work the way they do. The book is also for users of earlier versions of C4D who need to get up to speed with the new features.

If you are a professional animator in the entertainment business, you are probably familiar with the Cinema 4D Program. If not, visit the website at www.maxon.net.

The new Cinema 4D 10 Workshop book teaches you how to model, animate and render with a practical command of all the essential functions and tools. It includes detailed tutorials, suitable for novices and experienced users alike, that demonstrate how to navigate the redesigned UI and orient you to the workflow. Next, the author guides you through the creation of a more complex project in which you model, create, apply textures, light, and render a final showcase image of a sports car. Finally, you will model, texture and prepare a comic character for animation using the new powerslider, timeline and the revised MOCCA module.

  • Light, texture, and shade with CINEMA's material system, BodyPaint 3D, and the integrated shaders

  • Build complex mechanical and organic models using NURBS and polygon tools

  • Compose 3D content into photos

  • Render with advanced techniques such as Multi Pass rendering, HDRI lighting and radiosity

  • Simplify animation setups using XPresso constrains

  • Work with specialized tools such as HAIR, Clothilde or SKY for special effects

The companion CD includes all of the required tutorial media, a bonus chapter on character modeling, Macintosh and PC demo versions of CINEMA 4D 10, and a limited edition of the PhotoMatch plug-in that permits you to easily insert 3D objects into photos.

Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators, 2e by Mike Mattesi.
This outstanding book is key to understanding how to capture forceful poses
with dynamic drawing. It is informative, concise, and packed full of
inspirational illustrations. Mike Mattesi helps novice animators and artists
create appealing dynamic poses in their drawings. These are vital skills for
    both traditional and computer animators.

‘Force’ is not just another ‘anatomy for animators’ book - it assumes the
reader has experience of figure drawing and the focus here is to build on
that knowledge and to use straight and curved lines to show the direction of
force in the body. Every point in the text is thoroughly demonstrated with
the help of superb, dynamically drawn examples.

The first edition was self-published with iUniverse in June 2004, despite
poor production values and very minimal marketing it still garnered five
very positive reviews on Amazon.com and had healthy sales. Now it's a
quality Focal Press book it will do even better!

Francis Hill's "Computer Graphics Using Open GL"

This 922 page book combines the principles and major techniques in computer graphics with state-of-the-art examples that relate to things students and professionals see every day on the Internet and in computer-generated movies. DLC: Computer graphics.

OpenGL is a powerful software interface for graphics hardware that allows graphics programmers to produce high-quality color images of 3D objects. The functions in the OpenGL library enable programmers to build geometric models, view models interactively in 3D space, control color and lighting, manipulate images, and perform such tasks as alpha blending, antialiasing, depth cueing, and texture mapping.

The OpenGL Reference Manual, Second Edition, documents all OpenGL functions, including brand new features recently approved by the OpenGL Architecture Review Board (ARB) for inclusion in OpenGL, Version 1.1. The ARB is an industry consortium responsible for defining OpenGL, composed of such industry leaders as Digital Equipment Corporation, Evans & Sutherland, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, IBM, Intergraph, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, and Silicon Graphics.

Each reference page fully describes: C specifications, relevant parameters, the effects of functions, possible errors generated by functions, associated effects, Reference pages for the OpenGL Utility Library (GLU) and the OpenGL extension to the X Window System (GLX) are included in this manual.
