Winners Announced in the 4th Annual Star Wars Fan Film Awards

AtomFilmsÒ and Lucasfilm Ltd. Honor Filmmakers

In a Special Ceremony at Celebration III

San Francisco, CA  (April 25, 2005) – They came from across the galaxy, strutting their Jedi filmmaking skills and last Friday night (April 22nd), select filmmakers took home trophies at the massive Star Wars Celebration III fan event in Indianapolis, Indiana.  AtomFilms and Lucasfilm Ltd. announced the 8 winners of the 2005 Star Wars Fan Film Awards in a special ceremony held amongst the tens of thousands of Star Wars fans at Lucasfilm’s fan convention.  The winning fan films are now available for online viewing at http://starwars.atomfilms.com.

The competition’s top honor – The George Lucas Selects Award -- went to Barry Curtis for his film, For Love of the Film.  In the short, when a projector showing Star Wars breaks down, the audience acts out the rest of the film. In addition to receiving $2,000, Lucas taped a video message congratulating Curtis for his quality filmmaking and ingenious story line.

The competition’s second coveted honor – The Audience Choice Award -- went to John Hudgens for Sith Apprentice.   The online audience loved this pop culture spoof on Star Wars, where ”You’re Fired” definitely takes on a new meaning.   The additional awards went to:

  • Animation Award: Bamboo Wars: Walk in a Bamboo Bush
  • Spirit of Fandom: Boba
  • Best Comedy: Cheap Seats
  • Best Original Concept: Star Wars Elements
  • Best Crossover Spoof: Anakin Dynamite
  • Best Song: One Season More

As with previous years, fans were charged with the challenge to create Star Wars spoofs, mockumentaries or documentaries under fifteen minutes.  Judges at Lucasfilm and AtomFilms agree that the 2005 contest submissions displayed the highest level of filmmaking sophistication since the event began in 2002.  The entries from around the globe, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Puerto Rico and Japan, took advantage of the most current technology to create polished film experiences with impressive special effects.

“We congratulate all of the finalists for this year’s competition,” said Steve Sansweet, Lucasfilm’s head of fan relations.  “The winning films all show a unique vision of the galaxy far, far away and have that incredible passion for the Star Wars characters.”

“It’s exciting and an honor to be a part of the Star Wars phenomenon,” said Mika Salmi, CEO AtomFilms.  “The online voting and audience choice award is a special part of the contest since it signifies what people like to watch online.  This year’s winner – Sith Apprentice -- clearly shows us that people relate to topical spoofs in a big way.”
