Give Your Digital Images Meaningful Names
Andrew Rowley has
released version 2 of Picnam, a program for renaming and recording
information about digital images on Windows XP/2000/98.
Picnam is a quick and easy way to rename digital images and record
information about them in an associated text file.
Managing large numbers of digital images is becoming a common problem.
Digital cameras are obviously very common, but images also come from
other sources such as document scanners and scientific instruments.
People end up with a large collection of images on their computer with
the default names that the software assigns, and no easy way to record
what they are. Picnam helps by making it very easy to give the image a
meaningful filename, and allowing you to record detailed information
about the image in an associated text file.
The interface is designed to be simple and easy to use. Picnam
displays the image as large as possible so you can see details, and
even read text on scanned documents. Renaming is as simple as typing
the new name and pressing Enter. No right clicking or navigating
through menus is required. The new name is saved in a drop down list
so you can recall and modify it when you want to give several photos
similar names.
Information about an image can be entered in a text box in the same
window. The text is saved in a text file with the same name as the
image file. Text files were chosen because they make the information
very accessible. It is easy to see that they are there, and text files
are useable from almost any software. They can be read or edited using
a text editor on any system - no special software is required. It is
easy to include the text file if you are sending an image to someone
else, and you can be confident that they will find it and be able to
read it. Picnam renames, moves or copies the text file at the same
time as the image.
Templates can be created for the text files if you have common
information or a standard format you use for many images.
