Proponents of cultural heritage protection in China are making gains in conveying their perspectives to fellow citizens and to key decision-makers. The Beijing Cultural Heritage Protection Center (CHP) in 2009 successfully lobbied to halt the demolition of an important structure in a traditional Beijing hutong neighborhood, as documented by Number 24 Beizongbu Hutong: Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin’s Former Residence, the latest video feature at the nonprofit streaming-media Web site, The Archaeology Channel (http://www.archaeologychannel.org).
This short film, produced by the CHP, displays the dilapidated state of the former 20th Century hutong residence of Mr. Liang Sicheng and his wife, Ms. Lin Huiyin, in Beijing. The couple was among China’s most famous art and architecture experts, particularly in exploring Chinese ancient architecture. The former residence, badly damaged by a real estate development project, is a valuable cultural heritage symbol that once belonged to people who made influential contributions to Chinese art and architecture throughout their lifetimes.

This video features an incredible look at a Japanese Buddhist Shusho-E or "New Year's Day Service" that was held in a small Buddhist temple in West Tokyo. The Shuso-E service is the first Buddhist service of the year and dates back to the Nara period in Japan. This very moving and spiritual service is done as a way of praying and wishing for world peace and also to reflect on the past and go on to live a better new year. This service also includes the 'Nembutsu' which is chant of praise to Amida Buddha, the Buddha of infinite light and eternal life. Amida Buddha is the central Buddha of Pure Land Buddhism which is very popular in East Asia as it provides a straightforward method of expressing faith as a Buddhist.
Also, this video shows some happy Japanese people as they ring the temple bell in the Japanese 'Joya-No-Kane' custom which is actually done for a total of 108 times in symbolizing the purification of the 108 human defilements and the beginning of a purified new year. The Japanese New Year holiday is observed for seven days and is a very special and exciting time to be in Japan! Everybody is so upbeat and excited about the New Year and it is quite nice in Tokyo as millions of people leave the city to go back to their hometowns.
