University of
Texas Solar Vehicle Team
The University of Texas Solar
Vehicles Team is a student
organization
sponsored by the Cockrell School of
Engineering at the University of
Texas at Austin. Under the guidance
of Professor Gary Hallock, students
raise funds, design, build, test,
and race vehicles powered only by
the sun. At over 50 members strong,
the team is currently hard at work
building its new car for the North
American Solar Challenge 2008, the
Samsung Solorean.

Solar Car
In Part 2 of an interview with Chak
Man Yeung from NI Week, "Sunny" digs
deeper into the University of Texas'
solar "raycer". Featuring the
National Instruments CompactRIO
real-time programmable automation
controller, the Samsung Solorean
features one of the most
sophisticated electrical systems in
solar car "raycing". While the
CompactRIO is primarily for battery
protection, it also does state of
charge calculations, cell balancing,
array control, cruise control, HMI
(via a touch screen), and telemetry.
Solar car "rayces" are nationally
organized events, with competition
among dozens of colleges and
universities. The challenge is to
design, build, and race the best
solar-powered vehicle. The mission
is to promote educational excellence
and team work among all competitors.
To accomplish this goal, teams must
integrate technical and business
expertise across a range of
disciplines.
Cornell's
Automotive X-Prize Team
The Automotive X-Prize (AXP) will be
awarded to the team that produces a 100
mile-per-gallon (equivalent) vehicle,
develops a feasible business plan to
produce 10,000 units, and wins a series
of stage races against similar vehicles.
The Cornell Automotive X-Prize (AXP)
Team is the first officially registered
university team competing in the
Automotive X Prize Competition. The
group is made up of over 70
undergraduate and graduate students from
six of Cornell University's seven
colleges including engineering,
architecture, design and environmental
analysis, and business. The
multi-disciplinary group is organized
into several teams, including Chassis,
Electrical Components, Mechanical
Components, Design, Information
Management, Business Administration, and
Business Plan. These groups are
currently using a systems engineering
approach to design an automobile that
will push the limits of efficiency,
feature a distinctive and unique
aesthetic, and be commercially viable in
the market.
