California
Department of Public Health just announced its “Be a Reel
Hero” video contest, asking Californians to create its
next great anti-tobacco TV commercial. Do you remember the
ads that showed the woman with the tracheotomy who continued
to smoke through her neck, the impotent cowboy or the undo
tobacco spots? Those were a part of the state’s
award-winning media campaign and now it’s your turn to make
the next great anti-smoking commercial!
The Be A Reel
Hero contest invites all creative Californians to produce a
compelling 30 second video that communicates California’s
anti-smoking message. The grand prize winner’s submission
will air on TV in California in the Spring of 2008.

Maple Shorts
is an online celebration of Flash film featuring

is a nonprofit organization that helps media makers,
educators, librarians, nonprofits, and activists use

been finalists in a growing number of interactive and Film and video
Festivals including Newport Beach Film Fest, South By Southwest
Interactive Festival, and they took home a Platinum award for our videos
at WorldFest in Houston. My favorite is "The One with The
Matrix". Outstanding production value and technique. In
addition, they offer funny shockwave games and other content of interest
to kids and families. Good stuff.
Critter
Island is a short, motivational and funny 3D
animation that introduces two roaches of rival species. On a mission to
save their families from extermination, they are thrown into an
adventure where they must rely on each other for survival.
Featuring
three year method actor Aiden Travis and created by Jeffrey Travis,
"What's
Wrong with this Picture" is a hilarious short film that
combines live action and animation to express the dangers of young kids
playing with crayons. "Three-year-old Aidan may have
followed all the rules, but in a moment of carelessness, his own
creation will go horribly wrong."

and film maker - some
by video production companies and
organizations, However, many of our
favorites are made created and submitted by
amateurs and people who are just having fun
with video. Check out this short QuickTime
video from Alissa Steele. It a short
clip of her dog playing frisbee. Cute and
well made.

Here is
a real find. Shot and edited by 12 year old,
Robby Kokesch. Mandi's
Tooth. Little Mandi has been bothered
all week by a very loose tooth. It is time
to get rid of the pesky thing. Mom decides
to help out. You can feel the apprehension
poor Mandi is experiencing as she gets ready
for the final yank.

This half hour program is about 13-year-old Jason who, because of his parents' recent
divorce is too blue to celebrate Halloween. His mood cheers, however, when a magical pumpkin rolls into his life. That evening, the mysterious squash prods Jason to ring the doorbell of creepy Mr. Hain, who has frightened trick-or-treaters for years. Perhaps Mr. Hain isn't as mean as his reputation.
