Are you up to speed with Current? It's a new cable TV channel with a strong online video presence. They run a series of contests looking for new filmmakers with an edgy style and something important to say. Also, check out the winners of last year's contest. . Some of these videos are GREAT. We really liked the Campaign Ad Commercial, a wonderful parody of what goes on inside of a typical political ad spot,  and How to Start Your Own Holiday. a pitch for those who are happily unattached on Valentines Day.

Glitches can be a good thing. The Glitch site features two related film festivals - GlitchFast for DV videos under 3 minutes in length and GlitchFest for videos from 3 minutes to 10 minutes. Even better, they are currently looking for submissions (until August 1, 2005). Winner gets a copy of Autodesk's Combustion . There are 200 productions hosted for free on the festival’s website. A retrospective compilation of the last five editions is also available in the Glitch’s online store. If French isn't your language of choice, scroll to the bottom of the page and pick English. What are they looking for? "Let your minds run free, this is the perfect occasion to show us your guts, your originality, your talent and all of this in a very small amount of time!!! At the Glitch Fast, diversity, variety (… and brevity!) are favored above all else. All genres are admissible: fake publicities, gags, parodies, very short dramas, press reports, animation, fake cartoons, in French, English or others,… be adventurous: it is up to you to surprise us! As long as the film respects the time limit, and has a punchy, captivating narrative!"

Now you can buy viral videos. This is a very interesting site. I am sure you have seen and shared a cool short video clip with your friends, family and business associates. Most of these viral clips are free, low resolution and sort of weird and funny. Here is a new concept. The Media Gallery is creating short flash animations that are designed to shared as "viral" videos. You pay $1.75 and then you can share them or download them to your desktop. Interesting idea. We are always inspired when we find a web site that is created by a film maker or a group of filmmakers that is designed to promote their films and film making skills. A great example is AMF Productions. Located in Fresno, CA, the production team consists of a small group of friends who like to make movies and are focused on digital media and entertainment. This web site is very well designed to promote themselves with detailed production notes, cast and crew, screen shots for each production. Very well done. They've got about eight films currently posted on their site and more are on the way. Check out their latest,  Nietzsche , in which two young men have a very spirited and dramatic discussion about philosophy. Who could imagine philosophy could be so exciting...

You can also use the web to promote your full length film, Check out the One Happy Movie website, dedicated to promoting the documentary “One Happy Movie”. Filmed by four students from the University of Central Florida and Full Sail, the film documents a 10 day cross country sprint,  including small towns, universities, and big cities, to discuss something so simple, yet rarely asked, with several hundred every day people. From the rich to the poor, white to black, young to old, they asked.. “What makes you happy?” They got some amazing answers.  The site includes an online streaming video trailer, press releases, photos, tour dates, etc. If you got your own feature film you are trying to promote, this site is a great example of how to use the web.

Yet another great example of film maker using the net to promote a film and their skills is ALT.SEX. Contrary to the title, it is not pornographic at all. This site documents the efforts of an aspiring filmmaker who has put all they got into making a feature length film and what happens with it. The production journal is especially telling. Not only that, but you can download and watch the entire "Alt.Sex" film. Its a pretty darn good tale of love and seduction in the Internet-boom era. I was engrossed; great story with good acting and writing. Wonderful use of chat rooms and avatars as the hero's confidente... Check it outhttp://www.altsexmovie.com

Is this just a giant videoblog masquerading as a magazine? According to Jon Fortt of SJ Mercury, videoblogs are on the way. "They're new enough that the blogging community hasn't settled on a good name yet -- they're called vidblogs, vogs, vlogs. Sites like tim-hall.com, solublefish.tv and weblogs.media.mit.edu/ic are paving the way. Expect video-capable cell phones to lead the way as these become more popular. Now we'll get to see the boring moments in people's lives, instead of just reading about them." Go ahead and check out  http://www.tim-hall.com/vogner. This is a great concept site designed to promote a very cool and extremely well made fake documentary - Nothing So Strange - The Assassination of Bill Gates. Over the course of two years, director/cinematographer Brian Flemming shot over 70 hours of DV footage to create the 80-minute film. The high shooting ratio was due to the style of shooting, which was as close as Flemming and the cast could get to a real documentary style. Yu can download and watch the video - its' not free but its affordable. For 5 bucks you get the high res 466 MB download, for just 3 bucks, you can get a smaller 130 MB download. P.O.V.'s Borders is a new Web-only series on PBS Online. The series will be a showcase for interactive storytelling. P.O.V. has teamed up with award-winning Web designer Vivian Selbo of cavil.com to create an online environment that will feature commissioned and acquired content that explores the borders in our lives. The first episode in the series will run for ten weeks concentrating on 'migration' as an overall theme.
The core element of the series, "Leaving Elsa," is a ten-week interactive drama following the lives of three teenagers from the US-Mexico border, produced for the series by filmmaker Bernardo Ruiz. Ruiz is working closely with the students of the Llano Grande Center in Elsa, Texas to create intimate portraits of their lives as they face the biggest transition of their lives — leaving home for college. The students have been given digital cameras and during the course of the 10 weeks will document their lives in their own words and images. Entries will be posted weekly and site users can follow and respond to the three young people's experiences during the first 10 weeks of the semester. The Border Journey section of the site is devoted to digital glimpses of migrant life and education. Following the success of La Boda, filmmaker Hannah Weyer created Escuela, a portrait of Liliana Luis — a teenaged member of the Luis family who is working to complete high school. The original scenes commissioned for P.O.V.'s Borders are adapted from Escuela (recently featured on P.O.V.) and follow the Luis family through a year's cycle of migration. This feature has quizzes, background and questions accompanying the episodes, and targets educational use. (Learn more.)
