Are you up to
speed with Current?
It's a new cable TV channel with a strong online video
presence. They run a series of contests looking for new
filmmakers with an edgy style and something important to say.
Also, check out the winners of
last year's contest.
. Some of these videos are GREAT. We really liked the Campaign
Ad Commercial, a wonderful parody of what goes on inside of a
typical political ad spot, and How to Start Your Own
Holiday. a pitch for those who are happily unattached on
Valentines Day.
Glitches can
be a good thing. The
Glitch site features two related film festivals -
GlitchFast for DV videos under 3 minutes in length and
GlitchFest for videos from 3 minutes to 10 minutes. Even
better, they are currently looking for submissions (until
August 1, 2005). Winner gets a copy of Autodesk's
Combustion . There are 200 productions hosted for free
on the festival’s website. A retrospective compilation of
the last five editions is also available in the Glitch’s
online store. If French isn't your language of choice,
scroll to the bottom of the page and pick English. What are
they looking for? "Let your minds run free, this is the
perfect occasion to show us your guts, your originality,
your talent and all of this in a very small amount of
time!!! At the Glitch Fast, diversity, variety (… and
brevity!) are favored above all else. All genres are
admissible: fake publicities, gags, parodies, very short
dramas, press reports, animation, fake cartoons, in French,
English or others,… be adventurous: it is up to you to
surprise us! As long as the film respects the time limit,
and has a punchy, captivating narrative!"
OutoftheCloset.TV
is a new and very interesting video-based website dedicated
to entertaining, enriching, educating, and informing all
people about gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and
straight life. This website remains pornography free and is
distributed through 20 different web sites including America

includes a section abut the ex-gay - a bold un-PC move for
gay site. Also check out the comedy section.
Have you ever
checked out
RocketBoom?
This extremely cool site features daily news and video blogs.
Sometimes funny, sometimes newsy and sometimes just weird,
you should start off every day with a RocketBoom. For
example, the June 1 videoblog included a GREAT video
parody (Channel 8 teaser) of local news promotions.
Hilarious - but sadly true.
If you ever

to check out is the EVTV1 web

Do you shoot
and edit music videos? Do you have a cool music video of
your band or yourself performing? You should set up a site
to promote it and your video/music talents. Check out the

There are
hundreds of sites that collect video files and clips from
all over the universe. One of the most amusing is
KontraBand. Many of the collected clips here are in bad
taste, some border on disgusting and crass, and some are
just hilarious. Your choice. Go take a visit to the world of
KontraBand but remember, we warned you. Really, we did...
Do you watch
the news on your computer? If you are in the telecom or
internet industries, you might want to check out the online

determine the finalists for the competition. The more films

to see the world premiere of the five finalist films at
Tribeca Cinemas.
This is a
real hoot. Have you ever wanted your own TV show but
nobody would hire you? Create your own web based
Internet Video news or sports show. Checkout
MKYwebTV - not
only does this guy get to be funny, he gets to do his
own sports show and interview football stars and other
leading athletes in Canada. You can do this. This guy is
really good and could make it on broadcast TV.
Now you
can buy viral videos. This is a very interesting site. I
am sure you have seen and shared a cool short video clip
with your friends, family and business associates. Most
of these viral clips are free, low resolution and sort
of weird and funny. Here is a new concept.
The Media Gallery is creating short flash animations
that are designed to shared as "viral" videos. You pay
$1.75 and then you can share them or download them to
your desktop. Interesting idea. Checkout their clips -
some are really great. It' sort of like a video ringtone
for yourself...
Don't let this one get away. FishingWebTV
is a unique website is dedicated to providing a wide array of
quality videos featuring all aspects of sport fishing - from exciting

effective techniques. FISHINGWEBTV is all about fishing; how-to,
where-to, when-to and with-who. Plus, they are looking for your fish
videos! Courtesy of http://www.seenn.com.
FunkyRailRoad.com
is a very interesting site. It serves as a central compendium for a
bunch of different movie makers showing off their collections of short
films and videos. Some are very good. One of our favorites is American
Drummer, an absurdist comedy, GhostCops
- Cops meets Ghost Busters with some great cheesy effects, and Will
Work for Food., an exercise in corporate existentialism. There
is a lot to explore at this site.
TRY NETFLIX - its the best for home
video and movies
Netflix DVD Rentals. NO LATE FEES; 30,000+ titles. Try for FREE!
Have you ever heard of FilmFights.com?
Every ten days or so they sponsor a FilmFight where film makers create
short films based on a single concept or theme. They submit the film and
the fight is on! Some of these films are great. You got to check out
this site. Take off your gloves, strap on your camera and put up your
footage.
We are always inspired when we find a
web site that is created by a film maker or a group of filmmakers that
is designed to promote their films and film making skills. A great
example is AMF
Productions. Located in Fresno, CA, the production team consists of
a small group of friends who like to make movies and are focused on
digital media and entertainment. This web site is very well designed to
promote themselves with detailed production notes, cast and crew, screen
shots for each production. Very well done. They've got about eight films
currently posted on their site and more are on the way. Check out their
latest, Nietzsche
, in which two young men have a very spirited and dramatic
discussion about philosophy. Who could imagine philosophy could be so
exciting...
You can also use the web to promote
your full length film, Check out the One
Happy Movie website, dedicated to promoting the documentary
“One Happy Movie”. Filmed by four students from the
University of Central Florida and Full Sail, the film documents a 10 day
cross country sprint, including small towns, universities, and big
cities, to discuss something so simple, yet rarely asked, with several
hundred every day people. From the rich to the poor, white to black,
young to old, they asked.. “What makes you happy?” They got
some amazing answers. The site includes an online streaming video
trailer, press releases, photos, tour dates, etc. If you got your own
feature film you are trying to promote, this site is a great example of
how to use the web.
Yet another great example of film maker
using the net to promote a film and their skills is ALT.SEX. Contrary to
the title, it is not pornographic at all. This site documents the
efforts of an aspiring filmmaker who has put all they got into making a
feature length film and what happens with it. The production journal is
especially telling. Not only that, but you can download and watch the
entire "Alt.Sex" film. Its a pretty darn good tale of love and
seduction in the Internet-boom era. I was engrossed; great story with
good acting and writing. Wonderful use of chat rooms and avatars as the
hero's confidente... Check it outhttp://www.altsexmovie.com
Regardless
of what you think about George Bush, you got to check out the
Bush-bashing ads at MoveOn.Org.
This is some great film-making. IF
PARENTS ACTED LIKE BUSH by Christopher Fink of Sherman Oaks, CA
(the wiine rof the funniest ad) is hilarious; the overall winner,
CHILD'S
PAY by
Charlie Fisher of Denver, CO,
is not only thought provoking, but is also beautiful. Bush

Voter Fund, a new 527 fund affiliated with MoveOn.org

States. The Voter Fund will create and run powerful political ads in

People use Internet video in a lot of
ways. Some just want to amuse and educate. Others are selling something
or promoting their skills and movies. Others just use online video as a
personal medium to celebrate life and those around them. Check out this
QuickTime movie dedicated to the memory of Terri
Tinsley. While you are there, feel free to explore some of the other

Is this just a giant videoblog
masquerading as a magazine? According to Jon Fortt of SJ Mercury,
videoblogs are on the way. "They're new enough that the blogging
community hasn't settled on a good name yet -- they're called vidblogs,
vogs, vlogs. Sites like tim-hall.com, solublefish.tv and
weblogs.media.mit.edu/ic are paving the way. Expect video-capable
cell phones to lead the way as these become more popular. Now we'll get
to see the boring moments in people's lives, instead of just reading
about them." Go ahead and check out http://www.tim-hall.com/vogner.
There's some cool "Vogner" films on his site - using
"borrowed TV footage, you got to check out "Requiem
for Gone with the Attack of the Babe" He is using Canon

links to some wonderful sites like those posted below....For more Tim

This is a great concept site designed
to promote a very cool and extremely well made fake documentary - Nothing
So Strange - The Assassination of Bill Gates. Over the course of two
years, director/cinematographer Brian Flemming shot over 70 hours of DV
footage to create the 80-minute film. The high shooting ratio was due to
the style of shooting, which was as close as Flemming and the cast could
get to a real documentary style. Yu can download and watch the video -
its' not free but its affordable. For 5 bucks you get the high res 466
MB download, for just 3 bucks, you can get a smaller 130 MB download.
These files use the high-quality MPEG 4 compression format and require

The
Alex Hatz web site is a perfect
demonstration of how a filmmaker and actor uses the web to promote
himself, his business and his film making expertise. There are some
great little films here like Tunnel
Vision - a funny short story of two men competing for the attention
of a beautiful woman, and when their train enters a tunnel one of them
makes his move, with surprising consequences...Alex Hatz stars in this
film by Geoff Rayes and Doppler Films. Produced, written and directed by
Alex Hatz, the Hitman
is a very cute short film about the conflicts between a contracted
murderer and his parental responsibilities.

P.O.V.'s Borders is a new Web-only series on PBS Online.
The series will be a showcase for interactive storytelling. P.O.V. has teamed up with award-winning Web designer Vivian Selbo of cavil.com to create an online environment that will feature commissioned and acquired content that explores the borders in our lives. The first episode in the series will run for ten weeks concentrating on 'migration' as an overall theme.
The core element of the series, "Leaving Elsa," is a ten-week interactive drama following the lives of three teenagers from the US-Mexico border, produced for the series by filmmaker Bernardo Ruiz. Ruiz is working closely with the students of the Llano Grande Center in Elsa, Texas to create intimate portraits of their lives as they face the biggest transition of their lives — leaving home for college. The students have been given digital cameras and during the course of the 10 weeks will document their lives in their own words and images. Entries will be posted weekly and site users can follow and respond to the three young people's experiences during the first 10 weeks of the semester.
The Border Journey
section of the site is devoted to digital glimpses of migrant life and education. Following the success of La
Boda, filmmaker Hannah Weyer created Escuela, a portrait of Liliana Luis — a teenaged member of the Luis family who is working to complete high school. The original scenes commissioned for P.O.V.'s Borders are adapted from Escuela (recently featured on
P.O.V.) and follow the Luis family through a year's cycle of migration. This feature has quizzes, background and questions accompanying the episodes, and targets educational use. (Learn more.)
Ready
to take a trip on the weird side? Check out
Rob Pongi.com, a site dedicated to the short videos and films
produced by, and starring Rob Pongi of Tokyo DV. It is in English
and most of the material is based on life in Japan, featuring Japanese
culture, arts and music. But there is a bunch of odd and strange stuff
tossed in there as well, especially the conversation and interview
clips. The Personals section is Rob Pongi reading fractured English
letters from Japanese women looking for overseas soul mates. However,
for a true cultural experience, the numerous music and culture clips
can't be beat.

You
got to hand it to the Dutch. They have taken to the web in a big way. On
of our favorite Dutch web sites is Crazy
Fun and their Crazy
Movies page. This page features some great European TV commercials
that would never get aired on more conservative United States networks.
Scattered among the commercials, there are a few other clips that
illustrate what I call Dutch humor. Check it out. These are all
downloadable for easy sharing among friends and associates. They also
have links to "crazy" news, pictures, games and even GSM ring
tone files. If you read Dutch, you will also enjoy their Weekly Geek of
the Week and Jokes pages...

of our favorites include the interactive Osama
Sissyfight and MicroGerbil

StudentFilms.Com

on your computer to

Speaking of stupid and weird video clips,
you can see those kind of videos, and much more, at NetBroadcaster.com.
You got to sign up as a member and endure some irritating pop-up ads,
but it is worth it. They have a great selection of independent short
films, as well as documentaries, film trailers, action-adventure films,
as well as many people's favorites, the soft porn "Bikini
Girl" videos. They also have music videos, interviews with
musicians and movie stars, and much more..
