Nova Video Explosion Deluxe

Nova Video Explosion Deluxe - Great Video Editing packed with lots of fun stuff

by Lance Albright

The Nova Video Explosion Deluxe combines a basic and simple to master video editing suite with a vast collection of video clips, stock digital images and audio files to help you create your own video programs. Nova has long been a source of stock footage, fonts and clip art for the still imaging industry so this product makes a lot of sense.

It includes over 1,000 sound effects including animals, cars, cartoon sounds, sports, SCI-Fi and space, and lots more. You also get 250 royalty free musical themes to make your production sound professional and over 750 various backgrounds, textures and overlays as well as 250 video clips. These can be used to spice up your title sequences as well as to create some cool looking “location” scenes.

However, the real power of Nova Video Explosion Deluxe is the video editing module. You can capture video and audio from DV and analog sources, import MPEG1, MPEG2, avi and QuickTime video clips,  trim your clips, and edit together productions using an adjustable timeline with two video tracks and three audio tracks.  The three stereo audio tracks make it easy to add sound effects, music and narration.  You can add credits and titles to the various scenes, as well as special effects and transitions.

Nova Video Explosion also supports an un-limited number of undo and redo capabilities.

As you would expect, you get lots of effects and transitions. It includes over 150 wipes, page rolls, dissolves, etc., as well as over 100 special effects. It also includes very powerful audio mixing capabilities and effects such as reverb, flange, EQ, delay and stutter. Very cool.

The editing process is a bit different from other editing programs, but with a little practice becomes easy to use. Instead of a separate clip trim window, you highlight your clip on the timeline and trim it there. I also found inserting graphics and text to be a bit awkward as they don't perfectly match up on the timeline. However, it wasn't hard to get them synchronized.

The titles look very good for such a inexpensive package, you get an amazing set of  features such as animated text and scrolling titles, as well as the ability to change font and colors, add shadows and outline effects.

When you are all done, you can export your movies in a variety of formats and compression ranges. If your computer supports it, you can record the video back to tape, burn it to a CD or DVD, or save it as a digital file in a range of formats including MPEG 1, MPEG2, AVI, Windows Media Video (wmv), QuickTime or RealMedia.  If you want to save your finished movie as a streaming format, you have a choice of Windows Media, QuickTime and RealMedia, all with a selection of compression ratios.  You can even create a standalone web page with your movie embedded in it. When complete, you can add the video web page to your web site.

We are very impressed with Nova Video Explosion Deluxe.
