THE TOP TEN STREAMING VIDEO SITES DELIVER 184 MILLION

TOTAL STREAMS IN JULY ‘02

The top ten streaming video sites tracked by AccuStream iMedia Research delivered a

total of 183.7 million streams served in July 2002, paced by Yahoo’s Launch.com music video

destination with 41 million total views, and another 63.9 million combined from both AOL+ and

Real Networks (free and RealOne subscription video views included) based on the latest data.

Launch.com viewing patterns have accelerated in 2002 as the property has become more

integrated into the Yahoo service, and given promotional support across the multiple sites

published by the company.

Yahoo’s decision to shutter its streaming video finance service and contract with next-generation

CDN bandwidth providers has apparently given the Launch.com brand more latitude

to pursue a more aggressive market development agenda, in part by pushing up its monthly

streaming totals.

That, combined with Yahoo’s decision to support rich forms of streaming advertising will

present sales teams with a bigger inventory and reach story to tell clients and agencies.

In many cases in 2002, streaming growth has been a victim of a very tough advertising climate, and the need to balance stream growth with the ability to cover all the costs associated with making the streams available, and the move to subscription services which has knocked cross-platform brands CNET and CNN out of the top ten.

The top ten sites are once again populated, however, by Internet-only brands like Yahoo and Real Networks, along with the usual mix of cross-platform properties that include on a regular basis MSNBC.com, AOL+, WWE.com and ESPN. There is also content diversity in the top ten, with news, sports, film, music and entertainment represented.
