Microsoft Windows XP Captures 20% Market Share On the Internet in Less Than a Year
Among Web Users, Windows XP Operating System Second Only to Windows 98, According to WebSideStory’s StatMarket

SAN DIEGO, CA -- October 1, 2002 - WebSideStory, Inc. ( www.websidestory.com), the leader in outsourced Web analytics, today reported that Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) Windows XP has captured 20 percent market share on the Internet since being released a little less than a year ago. The operating system is now the second most popular OS among Web users worldwide behind Windows 98, according to the independently produced report from WebSideStory’s StatMarket®, a leading source of data on global Internet user trends.

As of Sept. 25, 2002, XP’s global Web usage share – the percentage of Internet users with XP as their operating system – had risen to 19.94 percent, up from about 2.4 percent during the first week of November 2001, StatMarket reported. Microsoft Windows 98 still ranks as the No. 1 OS version among Web users worldwide, with nearly 37 percent of the market as of the same date. However, its global Web usage share has dropped significantly since last November when it was around 50 percent, according to StatMarket. Windows XP was launched on October 25, 2001.

“XP came on strong from the beginning so it’s not surprising to see how fast it has grown over the past year,” said Geoff Johnston, vice president of product marketing for StatMarket. “At its current growth rate, it’s only a matter of months before it overtakes Windows 98 as the most widely used OS on the Web.”

Although use of Windows XP has grown rapidly among Web users worldwide, adoption rates of the new OS can still vary widely from country to country. For example, XP has a faster adoption rate in Germany than that of the global average – almost 24 percent of its Internet population uses Windows XP. In China however, only 8.74 percent of Web users have adopted Windows XP.
